The question of “Position or Submission?” is a common debate in the Jiu-Jitsu world. Should you focus on securing strong positions first, or should you go straight for submissions? Let’s break it down!
Some practitioners prefer to chase submissions without prioritizing good positional control. On the flip side, others focus on securing dominant positions, even if they pass up a chance to submit.
So, what’s the best approach?
In my opinion, it depends on the ruleset you train under and your goals in Jiu-Jitsu.
1. Competition Jiu-Jitsu (IBJJF Rules):
If you’re practicing with competition-style rules like the IBJJF, it’s beneficial to focus on getting solid positions. Good positional control allows you to dominate your opponent and improve your overall Jiu-Jitsu within the competition ecosystem. By prioritizing positions, you’ll gain the control and points that are crucial in this format.
2. No-Gi & Professional Events:
For no-gi practitioners and competitors in professional events, submission attempts often take center stage. Many professional events reward aggression and submission attempts over positional control. If you’re training for no-gi or submission-oriented competitions, focusing on your submissions may be the way to go.
3. Hobbyists & Everyday Practitioners:
Most Jiu-Jitsu practitioners train as a hobby. For them, it’s all about having fun on the mats! You don’t need to stick rigidly to either approach—enjoy exploring both positions and submissions and find what suits your style best.
And if you’re ever unsure of which path to focus on, ask your professor! They can guide you based on your goals and help you find the style that’s right for you.
At the end of the day, Jiu-Jitsu is about learning, improving, and having fun. So, explore both positions and submissions and see what works best for you. 🥋
