This is one of the most common questions in Jiu-Jitsu, from beginners all the way to advanced practitioners. So, do you really need to be able to play techniques on both sides? The short answer is: Not necessarily—but there are a few exceptions.
Practicing on both sides isn’t required to be effective, but it can definitely help you understand techniques on a deeper level. Once you’ve mastered one side to around 80-90% proficiency, exploring the opposite side can give you new insights into the mechanics and possibilities of a technique.
However, if you’re brand new to a technique, I recommend starting with just one side, especially the side that you find yourself naturally using most often. This will help you build a solid foundation before expanding to the other side.
So, start with one side, get comfortable, and when you’re ready—challenge yourself to try the other side. It might just take your Jiu-Jitsu to the next level! 💪
